| Title | Assimilating All-Sky Himawari-8 Satellite Infrared Radiances: Preliminary Case Studies |
| Abstract | In 2015, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) started full operations of the Japan's new geostationary satellite "Himawari-8", the first of a series of the third- generation geostationary meteorological satellites including GOES-R. Himawari-8 can provide high spatiotemporal resolution observation with 16 frequency bands. This study aims to make use of all-sky infrared (IR) radiances from Himawari-8. We focus on 2 cases: a strong tropical cyclone (TC) and a severe rainfall event in 2015. In both cases, the analyses are greatly improved by Himawari-8 observation. Moreover, TC intensity and precipitation forecasts are much improved due to Himawari-8 data assimilation. |
