Development of a four-dimensional variational assimilation system with a high-resolution coastal ocean model

Abstract

We have been developing a high-resolution regional ocean data assimilation system toward monitoring and forecasting coastal waters around Japan. A prototype coastal system covering western part of Japanese coastal waters around the Seto Inland Sea has been implemented at JMA in 2016. The system consists of a four-dimensional variational (4D-Var) assimilation scheme with a 10km western North Pacific model and a high-resolution (2km) coastal model around the Seto Inland Sea. The coastal model is initialized by an initialization scheme of Incremental Analysis Update every assimilation window using 4D-Var analysis fields with a 10km resolution. The model domain for the coastal system has recently been extended to cover all Japan coastal regions. In addition, model and assimilation schemes have also been updated to improve oceanic phenomena in coastal waters. This presentation will provide not only current status but also future perspective of our coastal assimilation system.
