2022-01-20[Event Report]Prof. Avelino F. Arellano: The 85th Data Assimilation seminar (Jan. 20, 2022)

By using data assimilation, a research team lead by Prof. Avelino F. Arellano (University of Arizona, USA) improved the short-term NWP forecasts of monsoon precipitation under weak synoptic forcing conditions in southwest United States and northwest Mexico. The obervations that were assimilated are the precipitable water vapor (GPS-PWV) retrievals taken from GPS network. The NWP model is the Advanced Research Weather and Forecasting Model (WRF-ARW) and the data assimilatin method is ensemble adjustment Kalman Filter (EAKF) implemented in the NCAR Data Assimilation Research Testbed (DART). This work serves to establish a methodological approach in assimilating GPS-PWV in short-term convective-permitting moel forecasts in other areas of the world. Many countries in the subtropics and tropics face similar logistical challenges as Mexico, with respect to availability of high spatiotemporal resolution observational meteorological data to initialize high- resolution NWP forecast systems.
