Title Assimilation of cloud-affected infrared radiances
Abstract Satellite observations, especially microwave and infrared radiances, have significant positive impacts on numerical weather prediction (NWP). However the use of cloud-affected radiance observations is limited although they can provide valuable information to improve NWP accuracy. Several approaches to assimilate cloud-affected infrared radiances have been proposed, including assimilating cloud-cleared radiances, all-sky radiances, overcast radiances, and cloud retrievals.
We have developed the assimilation of overcast radiances and evaluated their impacts in the JMA’s global data assimilation system. In addition, we started the study on the all-sky radiance assimilation for hyperspectral infrared sounders IASI and Himawari-8/AHI. Preliminary results of these developments will be presented in the seminar.
