Title Recent data assimilation work at Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau (CWB) and perspectives on its global NWP development
Abstract

Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau (CWB) is one of the weather centers in the world that run and maintain their own operational weather prediction model and data assimilation system. In the first part of this talk, two topics of recent data assimilation work at CWB conducted with its operational global numerical weather prediction (NWP) system will be presented. One study is on the assimilation of Global Navigation Satellite System radio occultation (GNSS-RO) data from the recently launched FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 satellite constellation. Another study is on the revision of the ensemble forecast sensitivity to observation (EFSO) algorithm when applied to a hybrid EnVar data assimilation system, aiming to improve its applicability in this situation.

In the second part of this talk, recent work on implementing the U.S. NCEP’s FV3GFS based global modeling and data assimilation system at CWB will be presented. This work started about two years ago following a decision that CWB was going to switch to use the NCEP’s new generation global model for its operational NWP. The current results of the FV3GFS based system will be shown; in addition, the expectations and perspectives of having this FV3GFS system at CWB will be briefly discussed.
