Title Radar Data Assimilation in a Case of Deep Convection in Argentina
Abstract Severe weather events draw attention because of their huge societal and economic impacts. In particular, severe convective storms often cause tremendous damage in the southeast of South America. Therefore, it is extremely important to enable accurate forecasts of these high-impact weather events. To do so, it is essential to improve the initialization of high-resolution numerical models by assimilating high spatiotemporal resolution observations from weather radars. This talk aims to evaluate the performance of the Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter (LETKF) coupled with the Scalable Computing for Advanced Library and Environment Regional Model (SCALE-RM) for a case of organized deep convection over central Argentina. C-band radar observations including both reflectivity and radial velocity are obtained from the Anguil radar site (La Pampa, Argentina) with a 5-min frequency. Generally, radar data assimilation leads to better analyses and forecasts. Additional experiments are performed to investigate the sensitivity to i) the assimilation strategy, ii) the initial and boundary conditions and iii) certain filter parameters such as multiplicative inflation and observation number limit. Preliminary results will be shown at the seminar.
